Sponsored by Wintergreen Performing Arts, Inc., a not-for-profit organization, the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy is a unique experience.† Nestled in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, this year's Festival is scheduled from June 28 to July 15, 2001.† Now in its sixth successful season, the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival presents the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra, comprised of over sixty top professional musicians from America's leading orchestras who come together to perform under the leadership of Maestro Wiley and to mentor up to thirty pre-professional Academy Fellows and student musicians.† Festival performances take place in the John D. Evans Center, an impressive indoor/outdoor performance facility located at Wintergreen Resort, atop Wintergreen mountain.† Additional performances and rehearsals take place at locations throughout the resort and valley community, including historic Rockfish Church.††
Mountain Resort Setting
Wintergreen is one of the premiere four-season resorts in the East, offering over twenty miles of picturesque trails, six swimming pools, tennis, award-winning golf courses, equestrian facilities and beautiful Lake Monocan.† Wintergreen is located approximately 100 miles northeast of Roanoke, 45 miles southwest of Charlottesville, and only 150 miles from Washington, D.C.
Wintergreen Performance Academy
Approximately thirty (30) outstanding pre-professional musicians, ages 16 to 22, will be invited to participate in this yearísPerformance Academy Qualified students on all orchestral instruments and voice-types are encourages to apply.† Pre-existing student chamber ensembles are particularly encourages.† Private lessons, master classes, chamber music, audition preparation, lieder, repertory orchestra, and even side-by-side performance experience with distinguished Festival faculty are all part of the Wintergreen experience.† The Wintergreen setting encourages colleagial support, creating a positive environment where faculty nurture Academy Fellows, promoting the highest artistic standards while collaborating in the great orchestral and chamber-music repertoire.
The Wintergreen Performing Arts, Inc., invites the next generation to join the finest pre-professional musicians alongside our Performance Academy mentoring faculty, surrounded by the historic beauty of Virginiaís Blue Ridge mountains.† Our hope for the Academy is to foster an ever-developing sense of musical stewardship, an awareness of past heritage, an education to some of mankindís greatest artistic creations, and an apprenticeship to high achievement, preserving that which is of merit for future generations.
The dedicated artists / faculty of the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy are affiliated with such outstanding ensembles and institutions as: the Minnesota Orchestra; the Ohio State University; the St. Louis Symphony; Roanoke College; the Syracuse Symphony; Virginia Tech; Concert Artists of Baltimore; Garth Newel Music Center; Kenyon College; the Florida Orchestra; Radford University; the Jacksonville Symphony; the American Sinfonietta; and the Indianapolis Symphony, among many others.
Fees and Tuition
Academy Tuition: Festival sponsorships help keep our Academy tuition low.† Only $800.00 covers the full three-week Festival and all of the Festival offerings.† As an added bonus, Festival participants receive a free amenity pass that includes use of the spa, pools and lake, plus free mid-week tennis and 50% discount on mid-week golf.
Academy Meals and Housing:† This $400.00 fee covers three meals per day for the entire Festival.† Academy participants are housed with host-families at† Wintergreen.† Driving to the Festival and having access to a car is helpful, but not absolutely necessary.
Tuition Assistance:† Although few festivals with greater costs can provide all that the Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academy does, further financial assistance is available.† A few select Academy Fellows will be designated within the Academy to receive substantial tuition remission.† Other students may be granted tuition assistance as funds allow, and some extra assistance or work/study may be available on a limited basis.† For consideration, you may enclose a letter describing your special financial need along with your application.†

Applications for Academy Fellowships must be received by May 18, 2001.†
All other completed applications and required audition tapes must be received

††††††††††† Special Note:† If the applicant is under age 18, the completed application must be sent via U.S. Mail and must contain the signature of a parent or legal guardian on the application as well as emergency care approval line in the housing information section.
The Wintergreen Summer Music Festival and Academymaintains a rolling admissions policy, so early application is advised.† All instruments of the orchestra and voice-types are encouraged to apply, and all applications for each are accepted until that section is filled.†
A non-refundable application fee of $20, which will be applied toward tuition, must accompany the audition tape.† Students may perform a live audition for a member of the Wintergreen faculty in their local area, or they may send an audition tape [cassette format, recorded Dolby-b (if possible)] or CD.† The recording should be approximately 10-15 minutes in length, featuring at least two contrasting works accurately representative of the applicants technical, musical and communicative abilities.† Accompaniment need not be provided.† Tapes/CDs, and a resume if you wish to include one, cannot be returned.
Students will be notified immediately of their acceptance.† Upon acceptance, a deposit of $300 will be required in order to hold a place in the program.† The balance of all fees ($1,200.00 total cost) will be due upon arrival at Wintergreen, less any tuition remission granted.
